Lago di Trasimeno is located 15 kilometers west of the city of Perugia in the region of Umbria between the towns of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Magione and Castiglione del Lago.
The lake is 258 meters above sea level. The surface measures 128 km², the maximum depth is approximately 7 meters. The lake is fed by rain and small streams. It is an endoreic lake, a lake that has no discharge to the sea. It is, after Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, the largest lake in Italy.
There are three islands in Lake Trasimeno: Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore and Isola Polvese. The most important place for tourism is Castiglione del Lago.
The ancient village of Castiglione del Lago was built by the Etruscans on what used to be called the fourth island of Lake Trasimeno. Castiglione is rich in history and also has many cultural activities. In the summer season, visitors can regularly watch films, folk dance and theater performances in the castle’s theater.
